The first book I read of Prof. Sid Watkins was “Beyond the limit” which I found quite boring as it included mainly statistics with some minor F1 accidents. However, his earlier book “Life at the limit” turned out to be a complete different story. It covers periods of F1 in which races were not as safe as they are now, and there were plenty of dramatic details in description of tragic accidents on racetracks. The book inspired me to learn history of F1 and brought nostalgic feelings of the old days, when things were different and the battle was tougher. The book includes many episodes of driver’s private lives outside the track and F1 and many of them are hilarious. I also was very interesting in medical details when the doctors leading by Prof. were saving lives of the drivers after crashes. The close relationship of Prof. and Ayrton Senna connect the whole book as a thin thread discovering the private human side of the great Brazilian. The book pays tribute to the drivers of the golden years and leaves you with a slight taste of bitterness as we lost the majority of them. And all that as a whole leaves the impression of the great book written by an outstanding person.
